EDGAR ORLAINETA | SIMON HAMUI
VARIATIONS ON NON-EUCLIDEAN
(MISS EXPANDING UNIVERSE)
A Bibliography.

A collaboration created by artist Edgar Orlaineta and designer Simon Hamui that emerged from a multidisciplinary exhibition by Orlaineta, which was exhibited at Siqueiros’ La Tallera. The series consists of a lounge chair (Ruth Lounge Chair), a coffee table (Red Shift Table), and a bookcase (Miss Expanding Universe), all inspired by the exhibition’s central concept.
A house, a dancer and a sculptor. These pieces are born from an exploration of
architecture, dance and sculpture, having as its main reference the avant-garde ballet dancer and choreographer Ruth Page (1899-1991).
The image of Page living in a house made entirely of steel, created by architect Howard T. Fisher, was enough to stimulate the imagination and speculate on the spatial and temporary relationships between dance, architecture and objects. Inspired by Isamu Noguchi's sculpture “Miss Expanding Universe” and the costumes that resembled it that he created for Page, the objective was to highlight those moments of cultural and social relevance from a vision of progress.
Ideas about craftsmanship and quality are not the main theme of this project, but assumed characteristics. This collaboration stems from a friendship and compatibility in creative philosophies. Full understanding and appreciation for manufacturing processes is fully intertwined with art and design, both philosophically and in practice.
